Our reliance on fossil fuels is a key question hanging over the outcome of our modern society. It seems beyond doubt that the sea levels will rise and other extreme weather conditions will occur as the world climate changes. Whether or not this is the result of human action and reliance on fossil fuels is still being contested.
Always upon the larger stage there are smaller dramas being played out. The tradition of mining goes back generations and in the Jiul Valley in Romania this is no exception. It is a single industry community, relying on the few remaining coal mines that are still producing coal.
One by one the mines are closing.
