La Meuse

Photographs // Sally Low

The river Meuse begins its 925-kilometer journey in France’s Plateau of Langres, flowing north through Belgium and the Netherlands before reaching the North Sea. Along its path, it enriches dense forests, historic towns, and industrial regions, playing a critical role in local economies and ecosystems. The Meuse is integral not just for its natural beauty and ecological importance, but also as a lifeline for the communities along its banks, supporting various activities and livelihoods. A photo project capturing this journey highlights the vibrant life along the river—from leisurely riverbank picnics to bustling industrial operations, each frame telling a story of the river’s profound influence on the human and natural landscape it traverses.
