Our reliance on fossil fuels is having a major impact on our world. Weather patterns are changing, sea levels are rising, and air pollution is reducing life expectancy. Coal is the dirtiest of fossil fuels and according to Greenpeace it is currently the greatest threat to our climate.

But always upon the larger stage smaller dramas are played out. The tradition of deep shaft mining in Romania’s Jiu Valley goes back generations. This is a single industry community relying on the few remaining coal mines that are still producing coal.
